These paintings depict solitary spaces evoking a sense
of mystery and silence. The images of ancient rock walls devoid of sky
or water have a monumental and anthropomorphic quality, a sense of weight,
gravity and immediacy. Rock forms are used as a metaphor for body, with
dark void-like recesses holding the secrets and memories of the earth.
Life forms are held in suspension or compression, ready to emerge. Rounded
forms like eggs, elongated forms like bone and muscle, and internal
passages suggesting penetration, womb, and birth canal have strong body
references, allowing the viewer to question their meaning.
