Georgian
Bay Series 2:
Juliana McDonald's Georgian Bay paintings depict solitary spaces evoking
a sense of mystery and silence. The pink granite suggests body, and the
rhythm of the forms creates a warm, sensuous feeling. The paintings of
rock walls are monumental in structure and have an anthropomorphic quality,
a sense of weight and gravity. This metaphor of rock forms as body conveys
a sense of time and memory with dark void-like recesses holding secrets
of the earth.
"It is impossible to tell the scale of the rocks or
bodies of water. Are they puddles with pebbles or lakes with boulders?
Those
mysteries, combined
with the rocks' anthropomorphic qualities, are endlessly fascinating puzzles." Paul Gessell, The
Ottawa Citizen
